Small businesses hit hard by rates rise

Britain's small businesses, the lifeblood of many local communities, are being crippled by huge increases in rates. The impact is compounded by many councils who fail to encourage them to apply for small business rate relief.

Last month, about 1.7m of Britain's small businesses received details from their local councils of their rateable value - the first review for five years.

Many have found that their rateable value has at least doubled, increasing their bills markedly.
