9. New business start-up numbers up defying "credit crunch" reports
Two separate pieces of research released in the past week indicate that small businesses are undeterred by the credit crunch.
The "Entrepreneurship UK: 2008", survey conducted by Deloitte, suggests that business owners are bullish about their future with 45% of those questioned predicting revenue growth in excess of 20% in the coming year.
Despite the bullish approach, over half of the entrepreneurs surveyed believe they have been adversely affected by the credit crunch, reporting a decrease in demand for products and services as well as tightening of lending policies by their bank.
The survey revealed that business owners considered a shortage of quality people to be the main barrier to achieving their desired growth.
The second piece of research was from Barclays and examined the number of new business start-ups in the first quarter of 2008.
The statistics revealed an estimated 98,000 new start-ups were formed in the first three months of 2008. Although this number is not as high as the record-breaking figures seen in 2006 and early 2007, the figures are an increase on the two previous quarters.
So despite all the doom and gloom it seems that small business owners continue to display the positive, 'can-do' mindset that characterises entrepreneurs.

Business Valuation Guide - How to value a business
When it comes to selling a business, the most important question you need to ask is - how much is it worth? Unsurprisingly, there is no exact way to value a private business. The seller will want to drive the price up, and potential buyers will want the opposite.
Although there are relatively easy ways to value certain parts of the business - such as stock, fixed assets (land, machinery, equipment, etc.), in most cases there will be a sizeable intangible element to the value of a business. Here, we look at some of the most commonly used business valuation techniques, and how other factors may influence the value of a business at any given time.
How the Corporate Manslaughter Act affects businesses
The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act heralds a new era for health and safety regulation in the workplace. The Act makes it easier to convict organisations whose senior managers are found to be in breach of their duty of care and thereby cause a death. This could have a significant impact on businesses, including those employing remote workers. Here's how the new Corporate Manslaughter Act could affect you and your business.
How to write an eye-catching press release
The majority of press releases miss the mark and are instantly dismissed by the journalists receiving them. But follow a few simple rules and you'll be able to write the perfect press release - grabbing the attention of busy journalists and ensuring you get the press coverage you want. Here are the key steps to writing that perfect press release.
Writing content to help promote your small business site
One of the best ways to attract visitors to your website is by providing related sites with quality editorial relating to your subject area. Not only will this give you a chance to promote your service or business, but it can also indirectly aid your search engine promotion efforts. Here's how you do it.
