Number of UK home-based businesses soars

 print  e-mail

A comprehensive new report on home businesses shows that over 60% of new businesses are now started from home.

In addition, out of the 4.5m small and medium sized businesses in the UK, 2.1m are based at home.

The report, compiled by our home business editorial partner, Enterprise Nation, provides a thorough insight to the make up of Britain's home-based businesses - from an industry and regional point of view.

The striking increase in the number of people working from home can probably be explained by a number of factors, particularly the availability of new technology.

The exponential growth of the internet, in particular, has changed the way businesses work forever. People can work from pretty much anywhere - even making telephone calls for pennies via the web.

Home Based Business Facts

  • Home-based businesses account for around 28% of UK employment, with a combined turnover of £364bn.
  • Over 60% of new businesses are now started from home - equal to over 1,400 new businesses each week.
  • The fastest growing homeworking sectors are in the business/professional areas, online trading, personal services, food and domestic energy.
  • The South East and London are the top performers in terms of the number of home businesses.
  • The North West and West Midlands are challenging the South East and London, as the fastest growing regions for home-based startups.
