An Introduction to Google

More and more indexes use Google as their source for web page results (although Yahoo no longer does) so when your site is indexed in Google, your pages will also appear on hundreds of other sites.

Google.com gets its name from "Googol", the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros (i.e. a very large number). It was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin who met first as Stanford University students. The Company opened for business in 1998. You can read the entire history of this remarkable company at Google.com.

With over 3 billion web pages indexed, alongside regular new products such as News feeds, its simple design and ease of use (together with accuracy of course) makes it an essential search engine to be listed on. Most sites now derive the majority of their traffic from Google.

More and more indexes use Google as their source for web page results (although Yahoo no longer does) so when your site is indexed in Google, your pages will also appear on hundreds of other sites.

Google, as with other "crawlers" periodically scan the web for new and updated sites and should automatically find new sites and add them to its index within a month or so. You'll increase your chances of being listed by building up links to your site from other sites.

Link popularity is a key method used by Google to determine your page rank for a given keyword phrase - this means, your page "importance" is driven up by the number of other sites linking to yours. The more directly related they are to the content of your site, the better the ranking. Many other sites are now taking up the "link popularity" ranking technique, so building up relationships with other sites in your field is crucial.

You can manually add your site to Google at the following URL: http://www.google.com/addurl.html.
