Google search ranking update - the longest wait ever?

 print  e-mail

The Google Pagerank system is integral to the operation of the world’s favourite search engine. It is a system for ranking all web pages indexed by Google. The higher the Pagerank of a site, the more 'important' it is regarded by Google - this is likely to be reflected in the ranking of your web pages.

It seems like we've been waiting forever for the next Google Pagerank update... well, the truth is - it has been forever, just about.

Millions of small business webmasters have been looking at their Google Toolbars hoping to see that little green line get a little longer at the next update.

Trouble is, at time of writing, it has been 79 days since the last update. Speculation on various webmaster bulletin boards suggests this may have something to do with the Google stockmarket floatation, or else it's purely an annoying coincidence, particularly for newer sites which have yet to gain their first Pagerank.

We found an excellent online resource which contains a list of all Google Pagerank updates over the past few years, and the time each has taken. The update cycles have tended to be around 25 - 35 days in length which makes the current 2.5 month wait quite extraordinary.
