Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Rates 2009/10 and 2010/11

 print  e-mail

Over the next two years - April 2009 and April 2010, there will be major reforms in the Vehicle Excise Duty regime - as announced by the Chancellor in his 2008 Pre-Budget Report. The article provides an overview of the changes, together with the new rates.

You can also read a thorough guide to the changes at the directgov site. You can view a full range of past and present tax rate tables here.

Changes to VED Rates in 2009 and 2010
  • From 1st April 2009, there will be 13 different VED tax bands. Cars will be taxed according to their CO2 emissions - Bands A to M. Previously, there were only 7 Bands. These rates apply to all cars registered on or after March 1st 2001.
  • For all cars registered before March 1st 2001, they will continue to be taxed according to engine size, as no reliable CO2 data exists before this date.
  • It is worth noting that from April 2010, we see the introduction of different vehicle tax rates for new cars in the first year of registration. The Government hopes this will provide a stronger environmental signal to the motorist at the time they purchase a new vehicle.
  • You can find out the CO2 emissions data for your car here - and use the Tax bands below to calculate how much VED you will need to pay.
