Self Assessment deadline extended to midnight, Feb 1st 2008 |   |
HMRC has reported that their self assessment online service suffered "technical difficulties" today (31st January) which has resulted in some people having trouble filing their returns online. As a result, the deadline has been extended by 24 hours.
Although the system has apparently returned to normal service, HMRC has extended the self assessment deadline to midnight on 1st February 2008 (Friday). Naturally, anyone filing after this date will face the normal penalties, starting at £100.
The number of people opting to file their returns online has grown rapidly over the past few years. According to HMRC, 3.6m taxpayers have already filed online this year, with over 100,000 today alone.

[August 21, 2008] HMRC have set an earlier deadline to taxpayers who submit a paper self assessment form this year. If you submit online, the usual 31st January deadline still applies.
[July 21, 2008] The ICAEW has warned taxpayers paying their second payment on account for the 2006/7 tax year not to be startled when checking the amount they owe on the HMRC website, following a technical glitch.
[June 30, 2008] HMRC have started to allow self employed people to offset mortgage interest and other fixed costs against their annual tax bills, something which accountants have previously advised against doing due to the capital gains tax implications.
