Self Assessment online - video help available |   |
As the self assessment deadline looms once again, HMRC have come up with an innovative way to help us poor souls complete our tax returns.
For people thinking of completing their self assessment forms online, a new video has been uploaded to make the task a little easier.
The short film, which can be downloaded onto an iPod or viewed online, shows the main features of the SA online system, and shows how much easier it is to file online than on paper. It is the first time a Government Department has used a video podcast to give practical guidance on how to use its services.
Viewers are taken through the registration process and given a taste of what it is like to file online, as a voiceover talks them through the main features of the system and gives useful tips, like what sort of information they need to have to hand.
The deadline for filing SA tax returns, and paying any tax due, is 31 January.

[October 1, 2008] With a new-look self assessment tax return on the cards this year, Pricewaterhousecoopers has produced a helpful ten-step guide to help business owners get their returns right.
[September 25, 2008] HMRC is continuing its campaign to encourage taxpayers to file online by phasing out the pre-paid envelopes normally supplied with self assessment forms.
[September 15, 2008] Whether you're filing your self assessment return online, or if you're sticking with the paper return, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by getting prepared in advance.
[August 21, 2008] HMRC have set an earlier deadline to taxpayers who submit a paper self assessment form this year. If you submit online, the usual 31st January deadline still applies.
[July 21, 2008] The ICAEW has warned taxpayers paying their second payment on account for the 2006/7 tax year not to be startled when checking the amount they owe on the HMRC website, following a technical glitch.
[June 30, 2008] HMRC have started to allow self employed people to offset mortgage interest and other fixed costs against their annual tax bills, something which accountants have previously advised against doing due to the capital gains tax implications.
[April 22, 2008] Millions of new look tax returns are being sent out over the next few weeks, following a revamp of the main self assessment tax return.
[March 31, 2008] A leading accountancy firm has urged small business owners to ensure they are making the most of available tax allowances prior to the end of the tax year on 5th April.
[January 31, 2008] Following "technical difficulties" suffered by HMRC's online self assessment system, the deadline for filing tax returns has been extended to midnight on February 1st 2008.
[January 25, 2008] It is estimated that 10% of the 4.5 million small businesses in the UK will not submit their self assessment tax return form by the 31st January deadline. The FSB says the fines late payers have to incur are an unncessary burden on the UK's small companies.
