We welcomed over 60,000 visitors in November 2025.

We publish no-nonsense guides and practical help for start-ups and growing businesses, with a focus on the self-employed (sole traders).

The site was set up by James Leckie and Emyr Williams in 2004.

Over the past 25 years, the team behind ByteStart has also developed other leading business websites, including SmallBusiness.co.uk, ITContracting.com and ContractorUK.com.

We welcome relevant news, data, and insights from trusted sources, such as government bodies, researchers, and established businesses. All contributions are considered on merit.

  • Focus areas: start-ups, small business finance, tax, accounting and business structures.
  • We’re unable to respond to every submission due to volume.
  • We don’t sell backlinks or provide any similar services which breach Google’s guidelines.
