If you’re starting a business as a sole trader and your credit history isn’t perfect, you might worry that it will stop you opening a business bank account.
In many cases, it won’t.
Most providers don’t carry out a hard credit check when you apply for a basic business current account.
Instead, they verify your identity and conduct fraud and anti-money laundering (AML) checks to confirm your identity and ensure your business is eligible.
Some high street banks may still be more cautious if you’ve had serious financial difficulties, such as County Court Judgments (CCJs) or bankruptcy. However, many app-based providers now offer fast account opening without a hard credit search, including two popular options for sole traders: Tide and Zempler Bank.
If you’re still deciding whether you need a dedicated account, read our guide on whether sole traders need a separate business bank account.
Tide: no credit check, easy setup for sole traders
Tide doesn’t carry out a hard credit check when you apply to open a business current account.
Instead, it verifies your identity electronically. This may leave a record on your credit file, but it won’t affect your credit score and isn’t visible to lenders.
If you’re a UK-based sole trader with a valid form of ID, a UK phone number and some basic business details (such as your trading name or Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)), you can usually open an account within minutes.
Tide doesn’t ask about your credit score during the application process.
If you later apply for business borrowing through Tide’s lending partners, separate credit and affordability checks will apply.

Zempler Bank: no credit check, with optional credit-building tools
Zempler Bank (formerly Cashplus) also allows sole traders to open a business current account without a hard credit check.
Like Tide, it relies on electronic identity verification and standard anti-money laundering (AML) checks.
If you’re registered as self-employed with HMRC and your business isn’t in a restricted industry (such as gambling, adult services or crypto), a poor credit history won’t usually prevent you from opening an account.
Zempler also offers an optional Business Creditbuilder add-on for customers using its paid Business Extra account. This reports repayments to business credit agencies, helping build a business credit profile over time.
Missed repayments, however, can damage your credit profile, so it’s worth considering whether the product is right for your circumstances.

Opening an account isn’t the same as applying for credit
A basic business current account doesn’t normally involve borrowing money.
That’s why most providers don’t need to assess your creditworthiness before opening one.
Instead, they’ll usually want to confirm:
- Your identity.
- Your UK address.
- That your business is legitimate.
- That your business isn’t operating in a restricted or high-risk sector.
Even if you’ve experienced financial problems in the past, you should still be able to keep your business and personal finances separate.
Can you still be refused?
Yes.
Although poor credit isn’t usually enough to prevent you from opening a basic account, providers can still reject an application.
Common reasons include:
- They can’t verify your identity.
- Your application contains incorrect or inconsistent information.
- Your business operates in a restricted industry.
- There are fraud warnings or sanctions that require the application to be declined.
If this happens, ask the provider why your application wasn’t successful before applying elsewhere.
What if you apply for credit later?
Opening a business bank account is one thing.
Applying for finance is another.
If you later apply for an overdraft, business loan or other borrowing, lenders will normally carry out full credit and affordability checks.
Tide offers access to business finance through partner lenders.
Zempler’s Creditbuilder service doesn’t require a credit check to activate, but it works by reporting repayments to business credit agencies, helping establish a business credit profile over time.
